Something out of Something Design Contest

“A man is sitting in a room, all by himself. He’s lonely. He’s a writer. He wants to write a story. It’s been a long time since he wrote his last story, and he misses it. He misses the feeling of creating something out of something. That’s right—something out something. Because something out of nothing is when you make something up out of thin air, in which case it has no value. Anybody can do that. But when it’s something out of something, that means it was really there the whole time, inside you, and you discover it as part of something new, that’s never happened before.”                                                                               —from Suddenly, a Knock on the Door by Etgar Keret

FSG Originals, BOMB Magazine Announce Etgar Keret

“Something out of Something” Design Contest

This winter, FSG Originals, and BOMB Magazine, are inviting readers, artists, and designers to draw inspiration from the written work of Israeli short story writer and filmmaker Etgar Keret to create visual art of their own. Something out of Something, which takes its name from a passage in the title story of Keret’s forthcoming collection Suddenly, a Knock on the Door (April 2012), will be run on a Tumblr of the same name, where submissions can be viewed and commented on by other entrants, readers, and Keret fans.

Twenty-five finalists will be selected by judges from Farrar, Straus and Giroux and BOMB Magazine staff, as well Keret himself, and will be announced on Something out of Something on March 15, 2012. Finalists’ work will be sold in a silent auction on April 29, 2012, with proceeds to benefit the PEN American Center.  The winner will receive a check for $500 and a signed and personalized copy of Suddenly, a Knock on the Door, and the winning piece will be featured in a Keret story or film.

“BOMB is all about crossing disciplines and generating conversations between artists and writers,” says Paul W. Morris, General Manager of Digital Strategy and Marketing at BOMB Magazine. “Through his stories, comics, and films, Etgar gets to the core of what BOMB does well, and we look forward to seeing what his work inspires in others.”

Each entry should incorporate or be influenced by Keret’s written work. Stories from his new collection can be found on Something out of Something, as well as links to previously published stories from earlier collections and links to podcasts from This American Life and Selected Shorts by Symphony Space.

Contestants are asked to post their submissions to the Tumblr or email them to EtgarKeret.DesignContest@fsgbooks.com. All submissions become the sole and exclusive property of Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and may be posted online at www.fsgbooks.com, www.bombsite.com, and/or  www.pen.org. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY.  Ends at 12:00pm EST on March 2, 2012. Participation open only to legal residents of the fifty United States or the District of Columbia who are at least 18 years old as of date of entry. Void outside of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, and where prohibited, taxed or restricted by law.
