About Farrar, Straus and Giroux - Books for Young Readers

Farrar, Straus and Giroux was founded in 1946 by Roger W. Straus. The firm is renowned for its international list of literary fiction, nonfiction, poetry and children's books.

Launched in 1954, Farrar Straus Giroux Books for Young Readers publishes books for toddlers through young adults in hardcover and paperback. Our award-winning backlist includes three Caldecott Medal Books, nine Caldecott Honor Books, three Newbery Medal Books, nine Newbery Honor Books, three National Book Award winners, eleven National Book Award Finalists, three Michael L. Printz Honor Books, and two Robert F. Sibert Honor Books. In 1996 we added Frances Foster Books, and in 2002, Melanie Kroupa Books.

They have been joined more recently by Kate Banks, Cari Best, Ann Cameron, Cynthia DeFelice, Candace Fleming, Jack Gantos, Phillip Hoose, Claudia Mills, Peter Sís, Suzanne Fisher Staples, and Tim Wynne-Jones.

Editorial Guidelines

Guidelines for Submission

* BEFORE SUBMITTING *

We suggest familiarizing yourself with various children’s publishers to get a sense of which company would be most receptive to your type of work. Most publishers have a Web site where you can find lists of both new and backlist books. Visit our Web site at fsgkidsbooks.com.

* SUBMITTING TO FSG *

  • General submissions may be addressed to the Children’s Editorial Department. Please let us know if you are submitting to more than one publishing house.
  • Response time for queries and manuscripts is generally within three months. Please do not call about the status of your manuscript. If you are still awaiting a response after three months have passed, you may write to us regarding your submission.
  • FSG accepts hard-copy submissions only. Do not send submissions via e-mail, CD, or disk.
  • Do not expect an editor to give you specific comments. We receive far too many manuscripts for this to happen.
  • If you would like confirmation of the receipt of your submission, include a self-addressed, stamped postcard.
  • Be sure that your name and address are on the submission itself, as well as on the cover letter. Always include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for reply and the return of your material, and keep a copy of your submission. Submissions that are not accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope will be recycled.

 Manuscript Submission:

  • Include a cover letter containing pertinent information about yourself, your manuscript, and your publishing history.
  • In the case of longer manuscripts (100+ pages), please send a letter of inquiry before submitting the entire manuscript.
  • Manuscripts should be typed and double-spaced.
  • Please do not submit to more than one FSG editor at a time, and send only one manuscript per submission.

 Art Submission:

  • Please send only two or three samples.
  • Never send original artwork.
