David Macaulay to Establish New Imprint at Roaring Brook Press

Roaring Brook Press has reached an agreement with David Macaulay to establish a new imprint, David Macaulay Studio. With the agreement, Roaring Brook is acquiring two new book properties written and illustrated by David Macaulay: "Home Sweet Home," an exploration of the way our planet's climate and ecosystems work, and a major new work on American history.

David Macaulay Studio will be a publishing home for these and other new works by David Macaulay, for derivative books published under his editorial direction, and for books by other authors and artists brought to the imprint by him in his capacity as creative director. The imprint will launch in 2011, with the publication of the first of the two new book projects acquired under the agreement.

"David Macaulay is a national treasure," said Roaring Brook Publisher Simon Boughton. "He's made a unique contribution to young people's literature, and led readers of all ages to see the world around them in new ways. It's a great thrill and a great privilege to have the opportunity to work with him, and establishing an imprint under his creative direction makes perfect creative and business sense. It offers the flexibility to explore new ideas and new formats, and a platform not just for book publishing, but for digital and other distribution as well."

David Macaulay said, "Roaring Brook has given me a chance to try something new and slightly daunting. Under my own imprint, with matching towels and pillow cases, I will not only be able to continue making my own books, but also I'll have the opportunity to encourage and support creative people who share my commitment to meaningful content."

David Macaulay's career began thirty-five years ago with the publication of Cathedral, which became a bestseller around the world. This was followed by a number of successful books examining architecture and the man-made world, several picture books, and, in 1988, the groundbreaking   international bestseller, The Way Things Work. All were published under his long-standing relationship with Houghton Mifflin, including his most recent and the last book to be published under the Walter Lorraine Books imprint, The Way We Work, which will be released in fall 2008.

Among the many awards David Macaulay has received are a 2006 Macarthur Fellowship, the Caldecott Medal (for his 1990 picture book, Black and White), the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, the American Institute of Architects Medal, the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis, the Times Educational Supplement Information Book Award, and a Dutch Silver Slate Pencil Award. He is a two-time nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Award and is the recipient of the Bradford Washburn Award, presented by the Museum of Science in Boston to an outstanding contributor to science.

Roaring Brook Press published its first list in 2002; a Roaring Brook title won the Caldecott Medal for that year and again the following year, and numerous other awards have followed, including the 2007 Michael Printz Award, for a book published under the company’s First Second graphic novel imprint.

Roaring Brook Press operates as a unit of Henry Holt and Company, a Macmillan U.S. publishing company. Macmillan’s children’s publishing businesses include, in addition to Roaring Brook, the children’s divisions of Henry Holt, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, and Tor; Feiwel and Friends, Square Fish, Priddy Books, and Kingfisher.

The acquisition was made by Roaring Brook Press Publisher Simon Boughton and agented by Ken Wright at Writers House. Terms were not disclosed.
