M. D. Usher was born in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, and grew up in Maine and Vermont. After high school, he returned to Germany to study carpentry and worked in that profession for several years before continuing his education. He earned his B.A. in Greek and Latin at the University of Vermont, and received his Ph.D. in Classical Languages and Literatures from the University of Chicago. He has been teaching and writing about the Classics at the University of Vermont since 2000. He was first drawn to the ancient world by reading the D’Aulaires’ illustrated classics on Greek and Norse mythology and has been enchanted ever since by the communicative power of the picture book genre. Mr. Usher lives in Shoreham, Vermont, where he and his wife run Works and Days Farm, a small sheep operation.
