Weeping Willow

It was like the rush you get in the movies when the cavalry comes charging over the horizon blowing their bugles to save the settlers. Something wonderful was going to happen today. I could feel it.It was real early on my first day of high school in the fall of 1956. I got up, careful not to wake my half sister, Phyllis, and tiptoed out into the hall, and into the bathroom. Nobody could have heard me, but as soon as I started running water the whole house came alive.

Reviews

Praise for Weeping Willow

[A] "trenchant tale of a girl's coming-of-age in the late 1950s. Written in crackling hill-country vernacular, by turns funny, tender, sweet and sad, this is a moving testament to the power and resiliency of the spirit." --Starred, Publishers Weekly

"Beautifully written, heartwarming, and--ultimately--joyous."
--Kirkus Reviews

"Her voice is strong, and the setting of the novel is rich in regional detail."
--School Library Journal

"The sweep of the novel is admirable -- four years, countless characters -- as is the rhythm of a slower and more innocent time."
--The New York Times
