From a former Fleet Street journalist and an accomplished British suspense writer comes a complex puzzle wrapped in a plot that could almost be ripped from contemporary U.S. headlines. Imagine what would happen if a vanished woman’s body lay underwater for almost three decades, the police unable to charge her guilty-as-sin husband until her remains are finally discovered by pure chance...

27 years ago, Clara Marshall and her two young children vanished without a trace. In the face of intense scrutiny, her estranged husband claimed she was having an affair and had left him, taking the children and destroying the family forever. Though police and the community remain suspicious, no evidence ever surfaces to prove he's lying, and his wife and children are never found—alive or dead. Until now, that is—when some unidentified skeletal remains are discovered wrapped in a tarp on the bottom of the ocean, reporter John Kelly and Detective Inspector Karen Meadows, each intimately connected to the events of so long ago, suspect that the final resting place of Clara Marshall has finally been found. But many questions are left to be answered—just what happened to the children?—and the decades-old evidence trail is growing colder by the minute.

Overflowing with page-turning suspense and an engrossing plot inspired by a terrifying true story, When the Dead Cry Out is the triumphant American debut of talented crime writer Hilary Bonner.

When the Dead Cry Out
Part OneOneOn a sunny afternoon in June twenty-seven years earlier, Karen Meadows, then a gawky thirteen-year-old, had been on her way home from school. As she approached the little street just off Braddons Hill Road, high above Torquay, where she had lived all her life she broke into an easy long-limbed trot. She was late for tea, again, and likely to be in trouble, again. It was her own fault that she was in such a hurry. She had no idea why she had lingered so long in the cloakroom gossiping, nor why she had detoured to look at the sea after that.

Praise for When the Dead Cry Out

Praise for Hilary Bonner and When the Dead Cry Out

"Hilary Bonner's secret is that as a top journalist she's been there, seen it close up and asked the crucial questions. She plots with pace, passion and that marvelous ability to keep you turning the pages long after you meant to put out the light."—Peter Lovesey, author of The Circle

“Pick up Hilary Bonner at your peril -- you won't be able to put her down. Bonner's taut compelling tales have more twists and turns than an English country lane. She'll drive you to distraction.”—Val McDermid, author of The Torment of Others

"A fascinating tale of believable people, in the hands of an absolutely ace storyteller; I read it in one sitting, with enormous pleasure."—Lindsey Davis, author of The Accusers

About the Author

Hilary Bonner

Hilary Bonner is a former showbusiness editor for the Daily Mirror and the Mail on Sunday (London). She lives in and writes about the West Country, where she was born and raised. During the 1980s she met and befriended her next door neighbor, a man who turned out to have killed his wife and two small children years earlier and disposed of the bodies so thoroughly that it took three decades to finally bring him to justice in 2002. These real-life events inspired WHEN THE DEAD CRY OUT.
