But before you up level your success and relationships, every good book should start with a good story. Here’s mine:
As women around the country decided this is the year they would drop those stubborn ten pounds, I entered 2008 with the goal to gain at least two hundred pounds every two weeks. That’s right. I wanted a full serving of a man across from me on a date at least twice a month. It didn’t matter if he was tall, just my height in heels, rushing from his Wall Street job or coming from one of his gigs as a nonstarving artist, as long as he had a nice smile with solid values, lived with passion, and was steadily employed, I was open to meeting him.
I was two years into my life in New York City. I loved my job as a magazine editor and had settled into a spacious apartment where I watched Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw and Living Single’s Regine Hunter. The two women showed off new shoes and new men regularly. I had my sexy red stilettos. So where in the hell was my steamy love life?
I realized, like the job and the apartment, hot dates were not going to come find me. I had to be proactive in achieving the love life I craved. And let me tell you, my life transformed when I leaned into love.
Over the last ten years I’ve traveled the world learning the secrets of successful daters and couples, while navigating corporate America. I serve as a global speaker, dating and career coach, and the senior editor for Lifestyle & Relationships at Essence magazine. When “relationships” is in your job title, you get paid to hunt down the latest on love and be in everybody else’s business. I’ve walked the streets of New York City asking women when they had their last orgasm and planned a surprise proposal for a couple who met through a story I worked on. I’ve interviewed more than one thousand people, including powerful women such as Hillary Clinton, Kerry Washington, and Sarah Jessica Parker. I’ve hosted focus groups, singles events, and dating workshops. I’ve gathered concrete evidence that NO, women don’t have to choose between success and love, but we do have to be intentional to achieve both. One of the reasons I wrote this book is because I started to feel women were succumbing to fears that the dreams for their personal lives weren’t possible. That is crazy! There has been no other time in history that has been this good for ambitious women.

I took my “at least two dates a month” resolution seriously and have the stories to show for it all detailed in Chapter 3, Date Like a Pro (don’t judge me). A year after setting my goal, I reconnected with a friend of a friend I first met at a Fourth of July party during my intern days in New York. That led to a first date at a Broadway show followed by a seven-year relationship where we were talking marriage. We’d discussed wedding locations and kids and I realized I didn’t know everything I wanted to about being a wife who continued to pursue her passions. I had already made plenty of mistakes navigating my personal and professional passions, like that awkward argument on a work trip in Miami where I angrily whispered with my boyfriend in the hotel lobby hoping my client wasn’t close by. I wanted to gather resources for myself and millions of other modern women on not having to choose between love and success. So I pitched this book you are now holding.
In a TV plot twist, the day I received the contract for my first book (hell yeah!), I left that long-term relationship (hell). It was time to move forward.
It was the ultimate #BossBride move: to do what felt right, even if it didn’t make sense from the outside. And the timing was the worst; I had signed up to write a book with the word “bride” in the title while getting over a breakup. The good news was I always knew every woman could be a Boss Bride, no matter her job title or relationship status. I trusted everything would work itself out and my creator had me covered.

He represented everything I needed (I had gotten clear on my checklist, which we will talk about in Chapter 3). I met him because I was first courageous enough to meet the best version of me and do what made her happy. He reflected back to me the love I had shown myself.
