In a contemporary town in the American midwest where he has no connections, Bax, an educated man recently released from prison, is staying in a motel. He writes letters to his brother and to others, including a friend still in jail, to whom he progressively reveals the intriguing pieces of a strange and fantastic narrative. When he meets a real estate agent who tells him he is, to his utter surprise, the heir to a huge old house in town, long empty, he moves in. He is immediately confronted by an array of supernatural creatures and events, by love and danger.

His life is utterly transformed and we read on, because we must know more. We revise our opinions of him, and of others, with each letter, piecing together more of the story as we go. We learn things about magic, and another world, and about the sorcerer Mr. Black, who originally inhabited the house. And then knowing what we now know only in the end, perhaps we read it again.

In The News

“Gene Wolfe is as good a writer as there is today...I feel a little bit like a musical contemporary attempting to tell people what's good about Mozart.” —The Chicago Sun-Times on Gene Wolfe

“The action is relatively straightforward, albeit told in staccato bursts of dialogue in service to a plot that is as rambunctious, complex, and beautifully designed as a Ziegfeld musical production.” —Weird Tales on An Evil Guest

“A whole that transcends its incongruous parts. Wolfe is one of the very few writers who could bring off such a tour de force.” —Asimov’s Science Fiction on An Evil Guest

“Gene Wolfe is the kind of clever writer who doesn't need to point out how whip-smart he is….[an] enticing mix of mystery, wordplay and ethical inquiry.” —The Washington Post Book World on An Evil Guest

“Offers plenty of action, romance, and historical color. Nearly every pirate cliché is given a new spin, from mutinous crews to cursed ships, from beautiful women in disguise to treasure beyond imagining.” —San Francisco Chronicle on Pirate Freedom
