London-based Virgin Books recently opened our American branch and our first list debuts in September 2007. Our mission is to publish authors — be they novelists, memoirists, Richard Branson, or former hooligans — who have something new and engaging to say about popular culture. And, being Virgin, we have a special affinity for the up-and-coming, the underdog, and the unconventional. We also pride ourselves on implementing very Virginized marketing campaigns. For our first book, The Flawless Skin of Ugly People by Doug Crandell (a Barnes & Noble “Discover” pick), Crandell is touring the nation with a dermatologist in tow. USA Today called “The Dermatologist & The Novelist Book Tour” as “the first-ever book tour to provide both skin care and brain food.” And copies of Flawless Skin were distributed gratis in Virgin Atlantic lounges at JFK, Newark, Dulles and San Francisco international airports, making this “the first book tour to be launched simultaneously in the air and on the ground.”
