Book
Four orphaned sisters disguise themselves as men so as to go out into the world and learn a trade. Once each sister has become highly skilled, they join the household of a young king where they rescue a princess and her brothers from the clutches of a dragon. After they've proven that they are not only skilled but courageous, intelligent, insightful, and wise, they have to face one more challenge. Will they continue to convince the king that they're men? And having met four young princes, do the four sisters want to?

Eric A. Kimmel has combined and reformulated two Grimm Brothers stories to give us a view of girls who are active and powerful and good-who do the rescuing themselves and end up living happily ever after. The story takes place in a richly textured court filled with traditional splendor, which Tatyana Uditskaya modeled after sixteenth-century Flemish and Spanish paintings.

Praise for The Four Gallant Sisters

"Here’s real reading pleasure. Kimmel takes an old tale, reworks it through the filter of contemporary consciousness, and couches his adaptation in the strong, direct language of a master storyteller." --School Library Journal

About the Author

Eric A. Kimmel; Illustrated by Tatyana Yuditskaya

Eric A. Kimmel has written many books for young readers, including the Caldecott Honor Book Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins. He is also a storyteller and a professor at Portland State University, where he teaches children's literature. When he's not teaching, writing, or telling stories, he spins wool, knits Arran-style sweaters, and bakes bread. He makes great beer and really good pizza too! He lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife, a dog, two cats, and several fish.

Tatyana Yuditskaya was born in Moscow and came to America with her husband and young daughter in 1989. In Russia she worked in the theater, where she designed costumes and sets and wore theatrical dresses. When she came to America, she cut off her long hair and started to wear jeans-much like the sisters in this story! More recently, Tatyana has worked in the conservation and restoration of old paintings and attended the Parsons School of Design, where she studied children's book illustration. She lives with her family in Brooklyn.
