The War on Terror has serious consequences, even for Louis Morgon, even in his small, not quite forgotten French village. When he learns that a misguided CIA campaign has led to the arrest and extreme rendition of Zaharia, who has been like a son to him, Louis is determined to find a real terrorist to exchange for the boy. His body may be failing, but his mind is still nimble. It better be. He has to play a double game navigating the dangerous no-man's land between the CIA and Al Qaeda, turning up old scorpions who, like Louis, would rather be left alone.

His quest takes him to Algiers, Cairo, the slums of Paris and finally New Jersey. He makes some sinister enemies. But he also assembles an unlikely collection of friends and allies, including a bona fide al Qaeda terrorist, some gang-bangers in Newark, and a dog named Buster. And he even finds love along the way.

Reviews

Praise for The Terrorist

"Wickedly tight prose propels a plot that shows not one shred of fictional obesity." - Publishers Weekly

"The Terrorist is simply a superb novel and a deeply human story about engaging people, life, illness, love, and terrorism." - Booklist (starred review)

"An improbable and charming spy novel . . . Steiner has a light touch, and what the story may lack in verisimilitude it makes up for in wit and an appreciation, amid the action, for the gentler pleasures." - The New Yorker

"Louis Morgon is a refreshing combination of smart and sensitive . . . Far above the average spy thriller." - The Boston Globe

"Power is packed into brief descriptions. The whole book is deceptively plain. The iceberg, however, lurks below. You see it just before it smacks you between the eyes." - The Oregonian

"Peter Steiner, channeling Hemingway with his clean, well-lighted prose and his characters, brings us an American expat in France who is drawn back into the world of espionage." - The Charlotte Observer

"In addition to the strong suspense plot that will keep you racing through the book's very economical 216 pages, Steiner's book is a meditation on the U.S, role in the world in the new century." - The Connecticut Post
