Jeremiah Hunt was once a respected Harvard classics professor, a happily married man, a devoted father. Then his daughter was abducted, and his world was turned upside down. He knows that something horrible and uncanny happened to spirit away his daughter, but the police don't care what he thinks. They are convinced that he is the guilty party. After months of fruitless searching for his missing child, Hunt has changed. He's obsessed with finding her. . .but when his obsession shuts out his wife, she leaves him. Before he knows what has happened, he has lost his position at Harvard. Desperate, he meets a man who promises him a way to "see that which cannot be seen". . .and after enduring a terrible ritual that robs him of his normal sight in exchange for granting him sight of the spirits and other creatures that exist beyond the veil of death, he becomes a hunter, eking out a living by helping those plagued by malevolent spirits. . .yet he still seeks his daughter.

Hunt later becomes the subject of a dangerous FBI investigation, with a unique cast of companions, including Dmitri, who can turn into a polar bear. After they receive a vision of a magic attack in New Orleans, they go to discover the origins of a strange illness, and defeat it.
