While a book critic at Newsday, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in criticism, vice president of the National Book Critics Circle, and winner of the Front Page Award for Excellence in Journalism. He is the author of Being Alive and Having to Die: The Spiritual Odyssey of Forrest Church. He lives in New York.
