Sawirus al-Muqaffa

Sawirus ibn al-Muqaffa was the earliest of the great Coptic writers in the Arabic language. Born early in the tenth century, he began his career as a scribe in the Arab administration of the country at the time, before retiring to monastic life and becoming Bishop of Hermopolis Magna. He proved himself a great champion of Coptic Christianity and a scholar of outstanding erudition. Highly venerated by contemporary patriarchs and respected by the Fatimid Caliphs, he remains one of Coptic Christianity's greatest historians. History of the Patriarchs of Alexandria is considered his greatest work.

Hugh Kennedy is Professor of Arabic, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, UK. He is the author of a number of books including The Great Arab Conquests (2007), The Court of the Caliphs (2005) and (as editor) Poetry and Warfare in the Middle East (I.B.Tauris, 2013).
